Capital One is a subsidiary of US firm Capital One Financial Corporation which began trading in 1995 and started up in the UK the following year. In 1997, Capital One opened their UK headquarters in Nottingham generating 1200 jobs in the East Midlands area.

Capital One sees itself as a highly customer-focused company with a commitment to making credit easy to understand for their cardholders. They provide a range of credit cards to suit their customer's financial needs and circumstances.

The company have been criticised for providing credit cards for some customers with higher than industry standard rates of interest. Capital One's counter-argument is that it means certain types of customer with poor credit ratings can at least have a credit card where they may not usually qualify for one at lower interest rates.

Making a complaint

In the first instance, you should contact Capital One by phone on 0843 254 8968 (24 hours: calls charged at 5p per minute from BT landlines). If this does not work, then the next step is to write to the company. There is no email address or online contact form link on the website in the complaints section, so you will have to use the postal correspondence address.

The website explains the steps required to progress your complaint. At the end of this process, if you are dissatisfied with the outcome you may take the matter up with the Financial Ombudsman (details below).
