About

British Gas formed through the demerger of the British Gas Corporation in 1997. In turn, British Gas is owned by Centrica.

Previously, the Gas Act of 1972 merged all the previous gas boards that served regions in the UK into the British Gas Corporation, and this in turn was privatised in 1986 and became British Gas plc. In 1997 the various parts of the company were taken over by Centrica, and the company became known as British Gas Group.

The company has received some negative press and publicity regarding its efforts to direct sell energy services to the general public. In 2012 the Information Commisioner’s Office was concerned about British Gas regarding complaints received about their telephone sales activities.
